“Musical Notation, Inscription, and Visualization” AMS Study Group

ARTICLE I. NAME
The group shall be known as the Musical Notation, Inscription, and Visualization (from now onwards NIV) Study Group of the American Musicological Society, a non-profit corporation.

ARTICLE II. PURPOSE
The NIV Study Group of AMS aims to bring together scholars interested in modes of notating, inscribing, and visualizing music and sound from historical, music theoretical, and pedagogical perspectives, and with no geographical, linguistic, or historical limits.

Throughout the year, the group fosters the development of new and diverse connections between scholars and facilitates the exchange of ideas. The NIV Study Group curates a panel and holds a business meeting at each AMS annual meeting. It also curates an online talk/discussion series throughout the year, the SG mailing list, a website, and a facebook page for presenting new research and engaging with any topic related to music and sound notation, inscription, and visualization.

ARTICLE III. MEMBERSHIP
The NIV SG is open to any member of the AMS who joins via the AMS website.

ARTICLE IV. OFFICERS and ELECTIONS
There are four positions: two Co-Chairs, one Social Media Manager, one online meetings Curator. The Co-Chairs, Curator, and Manager are members in good standing of the American Musicological Society. They advance the interests of the membership, including but not limited to maintaining and building relationships between scholars, other Interest Groups, the Early Music Program Fund, and occasionally, journals in the field. The Co-Chairs implement these interests via the Group’s online presence and by actively seeking to forward the interests of its membership. Co-Chairs plan and
administer the business meeting at the annual conference. Terms for Co-Chairs are three years, with voting to determine new Co-Chairs occurring a month before the American Musicological Society meeting the year in which their terms end. Voting is open and advertised to all members of the listserv and is conducted via anonymous online poll. Terms are staggered in such a way as to ensure at least one Co-Chair continuing their term across the election of other CoChairs.

ARTICLE V: COMMITTEES
Standing and ad hoc committees may be created by a majority vote at the business meeting.
1. Committees shall consist of no fewer than three members. All committee terms shall begin and end at the annual business meeting. The Co-chairs may appoint either just the committee chair (who will then solicit members) or both the committee chair and committee members. The Co-chairs shall serve as ex officio members of all committees.
2. The Co-chairs or members may organize other committees to address specific needs. Ad hoc committees shall dissolve after completing their mandate or shall become standing committees through an amendment to these By-Laws.
3. The Program Committee will organize panels, sessions, and activities at each AMS Annual Meeting that serve and promote the interests of both the NIV and AMS memberships. The Program Committee will select a panel Chair and Respondent.

ARTICLE VI: ACTIVITIES
In addition to panels and workshops held at annual meetings, the Study Group organizes online meetings (talks, discussions, reading groups) throughout the year.

ARTICLE VII: AMENDMENTS
Amendments to these By-Laws may be proposed to the Co-chairs by any member, at least two (2) weeks prior the beginning of the AMS Annual Meeting. Proposed amendments shall be made known to the membership via the AMS website at least one (1) week before the business meeting. Proposed amendments shall be placed on the agenda of that meeting for consideration. Two-thirds of the members attending the business meeting shall be required to approve an amendment.
